Batik Air Malaysia: From the Malindo Air Joint Venture to the New Lion Group Identity

Born in 2013 as Malindo Air, a joint venture between Indonesia's Lion Air group and Malaysian company NADI, the airline adopted the Batik Air Malaysia brand in 2022 to align with the brand already used by the Indonesian sister company of the same group. It operates from the Kuala Lumpur hub with a positioning halfway between a traditional carrier and a low-cost one.

A hybrid model, not purely low-cost

Unlike AirAsia, Batik Air Malaysia includes in the base fare some services that other low-cost carriers charge separately, such as checked baggage on several routes: a choice that positions it as a mid-level alternative on the Malaysian market.

Fleet: jets and turboprops together

The fleet combines Boeing 737-800s and 737 MAX 8s for the higher-demand routes with ATR 72s for the shortest regional links, a combination that allows it to cover both the main routes and those with more modest demand.

Routes: Malaysian Borneo and Southeast Asia

Besides the domestic links between peninsular Malaysia and the states of Sabah and Sarawak in Malaysian Borneo, the network extends to international destinations such as Jakarta, Bangkok and a few Indian cities.

A niche position in the domestic market

On Malaysian domestic routes, Batik Air Malaysia competes with both the national carrier Malaysia Airlines and AirAsia, carving out space as a mid-tier option between full service and pure low-cost.

Batik Air Malaysia is a good option for those who want a more complete service than a pure low-cost carrier without paying a traditional carrier's fares, particularly on routes to Malaysian Borneo. It is less suitable for those seeking the absolute lowest fares on the main routes, where AirAsia is generally cheaper. Practical tip: on routes served by both jet aircraft and ATR 72s, check which aircraft is assigned to your flight before booking, because travel times and baggage capacity change significantly between the two versions.
