Firefly: The Regional Airline Linking Malaysia's Smaller Cities

Born as an alternative to the road, not to the jet

Firefly's original idea was not to compete with low-cost carriers on the main routes, but to offer a faster alternative to road travel between smaller Malaysian cities, often poorly connected by the larger airlines.

A fleet that is all turboprop again

After an interlude with jet aircraft on some routes from Penang, Firefly has gone back to operating only ATR 72s (-500 and -600 versions), better suited to shorter runways and the low passenger volumes typical of the regional routes served.

Routes: peninsular Malaysia and across the border

Besides the domestic links between the cities of peninsular Malaysia, the network extends to a few short-haul international destinations such as Sumatra (Indonesia) and southern Thailand, areas poorly served by the larger carriers.

On board: more polished service than expected

Despite the small size of the aircraft, Firefly maintains a service style closer to a traditional carrier than a pure low-cost one, with snacks and drinks included even on the shortest routes.

Firefly is useful for those who need to reach smaller Malaysian cities not covered by the big carriers or who prefer to depart from Subang airport instead of KLIA to save transfer time in Kuala Lumpur. It is not the right choice for those who need to cover long distances or want a jet aircraft, absent from the current fleet. Practical tip: if your flight leaves from Subang, allow generous margin for the transfer from central Kuala Lumpur: it is closer than KLIA but local traffic can still lengthen journey times at rush hour.
