FlyOne Armenia: Yerevan's Young Low-Cost Carrier, a Few Years After Its Debut
Born in 2021 as a joint venture between a group of Armenian entrepreneurs and Moldova's FlyOne, FlyOne Armenia took off for the first time in December of that year with a flight to Lyon. Based at Zvartnots airport in Yerevan, it is now one of the main low-cost alternatives for connecting Armenia with Europe and the rest of the Caucasus.
History and positioning
Born in 2021 as a 54/46 joint venture between a group of Armenian entrepreneurs and Moldova's FlyOne, FlyOne Armenia took off for the first time in December of that year with a flight to Lyon. Based at Zvartnots airport in Yerevan, it quickly established itself as one of the main low-cost alternatives for connecting Armenia with Europe and the rest of the Caucasus, in a market that until a few years ago was dominated almost exclusively by more expensive full-service carriers. The choice of Yerevan as a base also reflects Armenia's strategic position as a bridge between Europe and the southern Caucasus, an area whose demand for low-cost connections went unmet for years.
The fleet
The airline operates about seven aircraft of the Airbus A319/A320/A321 family, some of which remain registered in Moldova and operationally shared with FlyOne Chisinau, a direct consequence of the joint-venture structure between the two companies that makes it possible to optimize aircraft use across the two markets. Sharing aircraft with the Moldovan parent occasionally leads to variations in cabin configuration from one flight to another, depending on the aircraft actually assigned to the route.
Routes and network
FlyOne Armenia serves about 28 destinations, mostly in Western Europe and Russia, with a point-to-point model from Yerevan rather than a true connecting hub: the network is still expanding and some routes have seasonal frequency, tied to tourist demand and to the flows of the Armenian diaspora toward Europe. The routes to Russia remain relevant for the migratory and commercial flows between Armenia and the Russian Federation, a historically important market for the country.
Fares and baggage
The model is unbundled low-cost: the base fare does not include checked baggage, an assigned seat or other extras, which must be bought separately at the time of booking or afterward at a higher cost, in line with the standard of European budget carriers.
On board and service
On board the Airbuses of the A320 family the service follows the low-cost model: drinks and snacks for sale, with no real catering included in the base fare. There is no loyalty program of its own comparable to those of the big European airline groups.
What passengers say
Being a relatively young airline, independent reviews are still limited compared with the established carriers, but those who have tried it report competitive fares on routes to Western Europe and an offering that has helped bring down average prices on Yerevan-Europe in recent years. The available reviews come mostly from Armenian and Russian passengers, with a still limited presence of Western European reviewers compared with more established low-cost carriers.
- Competitive base fares on direct routes to Western Europe.
- A simple online booking process.
- A growing network with new destinations added regularly.
- A relatively young fleet compared with many regional competitors on the same routes.
- Communication in case of delay judged to be room for improvement.
- Extra costs for baggage and assigned seat, typical of the low-cost model.
- Some seasonal routes not guaranteed year-round.
- A network still concentrated on a limited number of aircraft, with less margin in case of technical problems.
FlyOne Armenia is a good option for those looking for a cheap base fare on direct routes between Yerevan and Europe, and less suitable for those traveling with a lot of luggage or looking for last-minute change flexibility. As a young airline in an expansion phase, it is worth checking that your desired route operates on an ongoing basis before planning rigid connections. Buy extras (baggage, seat) directly at the time of booking: they cost less than adding them afterward.
