Grand China Air: What Is Left of the Airline Created to Merge Three Chinese Regional Carriers
Grand China Air was established in November 2007 by the HNA/Hainan Airlines group to merge Shanxi Airlines, Chang'an Airlines and China Xinhua Airlines into a single brand, based at Haikou Meilan Airport. In the following years, however, most of those pieces were gradually split back out into independent brands (Chang'an Airlines went back to flying on its own as Air Changan), leaving Grand China Air as the much smaller remnant of the original project.
History and positioning
The 2007 project aimed to create a unified mid-tier brand under the Hainan Airlines umbrella, consolidating three smaller regional airlines into a single structure. Within a decade, however, the HNA group reversed that choice, bringing most of the original components back to life as separate brands: today Grand China Air is what remains of a consolidation operation that, in the end, did not hold up in the form first envisaged.
The fleet
The fleet has shrunk to a limited number of Boeing 737-800s, a fraction of what the 2007 merger had originally put together.
Routes and network
Based at Haikou Meilan, Grand China Air's flights today largely mirror the network of the Hainan Airlines group itself, to the point that the airline works more as a supporting operating certificate within the group than as an autonomous brand recognizable to passengers.
In practice, very few passengers knowingly book a "Grand China Air" flight: most encounter it, if at all, through a codeshare or a flight operated by the Hainan Airlines group and sold under another brand. It is not suited to anyone looking for a distinct network or loyalty program, because in effect they do not exist independently. The practical tip is, if a ticket shows Grand China Air as the operating carrier, to set your service and seating expectations by Hainan Airlines standards rather than imagining something different.
