Niger Airlines: The Small State Carrier with a Single Aircraft and an Uncertain Future
Niger Airlines is the flag carrier of Niger, founded on July 31, 2012 and operating since May 2014 to take over the routes left empty by the earlier Air Niger, which went bankrupt years before. It is headquartered, with its sole hub, at Diori Hamani Airport in Niamey, the capital of a Sahel country almost twice the size of France but with a limited road network, where air transport often remains the only realistic alternative to road journeys of hundreds of kilometers across the desert.
History and positioning
In November 2022 the Nigerien authorities grounded the airline for safety reasons, an episode that weighed heavily on its credibility for a long time. The situation became even more complicated after the July 2023 coup, when the closure of airspace and ECOWAS sanctions isolated Niger from regional traffic for months, hitting any carrier based in Niamey hard. In February 2025 Niger's transport minister announced the intention to create an entirely new national airline and even a regional carrier for the Alliance of Sahel States, a sign that Niger Airlines itself may not be destined to remain the country's only, or perhaps its main, flag carrier in the coming years.
The fleet
Since December 2023 the airline has flown with a single ATR 72 (registration 5T-CSD), after years in which it had used different aircraft on a smaller scale. One fact that must be stated clearly: an entire national network now depends on a single aircraft, which means that any scheduled maintenance or technical fault can ground all of the country's connections at once.
Routes and network
Scheduled services all depart from Niamey to four domestic cities: Agadez, Diffa, Maradi and Zinder. There are currently no scheduled international routes operated directly by the airline. For many of these destinations the road alternative takes a full day or more of travel on routes that are not always safe, which makes the domestic flight a necessity rather than an option for anyone who needs to move between Niger's regions.
What passengers say
- Very few independent reviews circulate online, a sign of a very limited volume of international passengers compared with other African carriers.
- The most common informal accounts concern frequent schedule changes, a direct consequence of relying on a single aircraft for the entire network.
Niger Airlines only makes sense for those who need to reach one of the four domestic cities connected from Niamey and have no practical alternative by road. It is not a suitable choice for anyone with an international connection to make, since a technical problem on the only aircraft in the fleet can cancel the entire day's schedule.
Before arranging any domestic trip, it is best to confirm your flight directly with the airline within the preceding twenty-four hours: with a fleet of a single aircraft, last-minute schedule changes are the norm rather than the exception.
