Las Américas International Airport: where to stay, areas and recommended hotels

Las Américas airport is on the coast east of the capital, close to Boca Chica beach and far from both the Zona Colonial and the modern downtown neighborhoods: with the Autopista Las Américas it almost always takes 25-30 minutes to reach the city, regardless of the chosen area. Travelers with a dawn flight or a single night's layover can stay near the terminal, between Boca Chica and the airport's business hotels; those who want the historic center go for the Zona Colonial, business travelers for Piantini.

Boca Chica and Airport Area

Airport area · A few minutes from the terminal: the Hampton is about 4 km away (0.6 miles from the nearest airport), the Four Points about 5 minutes; Boca Chica and its public beach are 10-15 minutes away.

Best for: One-night layovers and early morning departures, when there's no need to go into the city.

Pros
  • Transfer of just a few minutes, useful for those arriving late or leaving early
  • Boca Chica's public beach, with its boats and kiosks, just minutes away for those with only half a day
Cons
  • Industrial, transit-oriented area: few independent restaurants outside the hotels
  • For the Zona Colonial or Piantini, you still need 25-30 minutes on the highway

Recommended hotels in this area

  • Hampton by Hilton Santo Domingo Airport: On Avenida Las Américas Km 27, just minutes from the terminal and from Boca Chica beach; buffet breakfast included, useful for those arriving on an evening flight.
  • Four Points by Sheraton Santo Domingo: Formerly the Quality Hotel Real Aeropuerto, on Km 22 of the Autopista Las Américas in Boca Chica, about 5 minutes from the terminal; outdoor pool and gym.

Zona Colonial

Neighbourhood · About 27-29 km from the airport, 28-30 minutes on the Autopista Las Américas with no road changes.

Best for: Travelers who want to sleep among the UNESCO World Heritage colonial streets, within walking distance of restaurants and monuments.

Pros
  • Walking distance from Plaza de España, the Catedral Primada de América and the Alcázar de Colón
  • The city's highest concentration of historic restaurants and bars, open late
Cons
  • Cobblestone streets and often small rooms in the historic buildings converted into hotels
  • No beach: for the sea, a transfer toward Boca Chica or Juan Dolio is still needed

Piantini

Neighbourhood · About 30-35 minutes from the airport, a few minutes more than the Zona Colonial because Piantini lies further inland from the Autopista Las Américas.

Best for: Business trips and those who want the shopping malls and modern restaurants of the new city.

Pros
  • Neighborhood with the skyscrapers, embassies and shopping malls (Ágora Mall, Blue Mall) of modern Santo Domingo
  • 5 minutes by car from the Malecón and its waterfront
Cons
  • Neighborhood designed for offices and residences, little to do on foot in the evening outside the malls
  • Further from the historic center than staying in the Zona Colonial already would be

Recommended hotels in this area

  • JW Marriott Hotel Santo Domingo: In the heart of Piantini, with outdoor pool, the Winston's Grill and Patio restaurant and direct access to the neighborhood's office and shopping area.
  • Hyatt Centric Santo Domingo: Opened in 2024 on Avenida Winston Churchill, 5 minutes by car from the Malecón; design inspired by Dominican artist Thimo Pimentel and a panoramic rooftop terrace.
