Royal Air Maroc: Why Casablanca Became the Gateway to Africa
Founded in 1957, Royal Air Maroc is the flag carrier of Morocco and operates from its Casablanca Mohammed V hub, built up over the years as a preferred transit point between Europe, North America and West and Central Africa. Since 2020 it has been part of the oneworld alliance.
History and positioning
Royal Air Maroc's strategy has for years been based on Casablanca's geographic position, exploited as an interchange hub between intercontinental flights and an African network that few other non-African carriers can match with the same density.
The fleet
Long haul is handled by Boeing 787 Dreamliners in the -8 and -9 versions, while regional and domestic routes use Boeing 737-800 and Embraer E190 aircraft, the latter often dedicated to African routes with lower demand.
Routes and network
Besides the African network that reaches dozens of capitals and secondary cities, the airline connects Casablanca with New York, Montreal and Miami on the Atlantic side, and also operates seasonal charter flights tied to the pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia.
On board and service
Joining oneworld brought reciprocal recognition of the Safar Flyer loyalty program with the other alliance members, useful above all to those combining a Royal Air Maroc flight with a broader itinerary on other oneworld carriers.
It is the most convenient choice for those who need to connect Europe or North America with West or Central Africa through a single hub. It is less suitable for those looking for low-cost fares on intra-European routes, a segment where the airline does not compete directly. A practical tip: if your connection at Casablanca is on separate tickets, leave a generous margin between flights, because African connections are subject to schedule changes more often than the European average.
