Surinam Airways: The Only Direct Flight Linking Suriname to Europe

Surinam Airways, also known by its historic acronym SLM (Surinaamse Luchtvaart Maatschappij) and by the commercial brand Fly SLM, is the flag carrier of Suriname, founded in 1962 and state-owned. Its hub is Johan Adolf Pengel airport in Paramaribo, from which the airline operates the country's only direct link to Europe, to Amsterdam, along with a regional network to the Caribbean and northern Brazil.

History and positioning

As the only Surinamese airline operating an intercontinental link, Surinam Airways remains the sole direct air bridge between the country and Europe. This explains why the Amsterdam route remains central to the airline's strategy, supported also by the large Surinamese diaspora in the Netherlands, the former colonial power, despite the very small size of the fleet.

The fleet

The airline owns just one Boeing 737-800, used on regional Caribbean routes, while for the long-haul link to Amsterdam it has relied since September 2024 on an Airbus A340-600 wet-leased from the carrier EuroAtlantic/USC, an arrangement confirmed at least until March 2025. To reduce its dependence on leased aircraft, Surinam Airways has opened talks with Embraer about introducing more flexible regional jets on the Caribbean network.

Routes and network

Besides Amsterdam, the regional network links Paramaribo to Georgetown in Guyana, Willemstad in Curaçao, Oranjestad in Aruba, Bridgetown in Barbados and Belém in Brazil, the latter sometimes operated with an intermediate stop in Cayenne, French Guiana. In 2025 the airline also reintroduced links to Trinidad and Tobago, using Port of Spain as a stop on the route to Curaçao.

More than a choice among alternatives, flying Surinam Airways to Europe is almost a geographic necessity, since no other airline operates the direct link; on regional Caribbean routes, by contrast, local competition is broader. Anyone booking the flight to Amsterdam should find out in advance which aircraft is actually assigned to their date, since relying on an aircraft leased from third parties can mean schedule or aircraft changes with shorter notice than with an owned fleet.
