Dogs on planes: rules and tips for the cabin
Airlines reserve only two or three spots in the cabin for pet carriers: booking your dog's seat must be done by phone, immediately after purchasing the ticket, because waiting risks leaving it on the ground or having it travel in the cargo hold.
Booking rules and weight limits
The maximum weight allowed in the cabin, including the carrier, typically ranges between 6 and 10 kg...; The carrier must be ventilated...; the microchip...the European pet passport depending on the airline, and it is always the individual airline, not a single regulation valid everywhere, that sets the exact threshold. The carrier must be ventilated, closed on all sides and spacious enough to allow the animal to turn around; soft models are often preferred because they adapt better to the space under the front seat.
Health documents to keep on hand
Before departure, a veterinary visit is required to confirm that the microchip, rabies vaccination and, for travel within the European Union, the European pet passport are in order; for destinations outside the EU, it is advisable to check well in advance whether a specific antiparasitic treatment is required, because the rules vary greatly from country to country. You will find the complete picture in our guide to health documents for animals traveling.
During the flight
The dog must remain in the carrier for the entire duration of the flight: it is permitted to pet it through the vents, but do not let it out. An absorbent pad on the bottom of the carrier manages any small accidents related to anxiety, and a collapsible bowl allows you to offer water in small quantities without overloading the animal's bladder.
Accustom your dog to the carrier in the days before the flight, by leaving it open at home: an animal already comfortable in the carrier faces takeoff much more calmly.
