Schiphol lounges: choosing between Schengen and non-Schengen

At Schiphol, choosing a lounge first of all comes down to a border: the one between the Schengen area and the non-Schengen area. Many lounges exist in a double version, one for each side, and each serves only the departures of its own zone. Understanding which side you depart from is already half the choice.
The basic criterion is simple: those flying to another Schengen country use the lounges of that area, those heading outside the Schengen area find another series of lounges on the non-Schengen side. That is why KLM, Aspire and Privium have twin lounges on the two sides, and the boarding pass tells you at once which of the two concerns you. If you fly KLM or another SkyTeam airline in business, or hold Flying Blue Gold or Platinum or SkyTeam Elite Plus status, you enter the KLM Crown Lounge 25 for Schengen flights and the KLM Crown Lounge 52 for non-Schengen ones free of charge, both on the second floor. The Crown Lounges have a useful peculiarity: even economy passengers can enter for a fee, provided it is outside peak hours. The 25, moreover, is the first lounge in the Schengen area to open in the morning.

Without a premium ticket or status, the reference points are the Aspire Lounges: the Aspire Lounge 26 in the Schengen area, near the D gates, and the Aspire Lounge 41 on the non-Schengen side, on the third floor between gates D and E. You get in with Priority Pass or DragonPass, or by booking online for a fee, with small children free. A limit to know about: you cannot enter too early relative to departure, so anyone arriving at the airport well in advance will have to wait before getting in. The alliances have lounges of their own. The Star Alliance Lounge 27, on level 3 near the D gates, serves the Schengen flights of Star Alliance airlines, for first, business and Gold members, and also accepts paid entry with a voucher. On the non-Schengen side, in the same zone between gates D and E as the Aspire 41, is the oneworld Lounge, opened in February 2024 and billed as the first oneworld lounge in Europe: it is for first and business on oneworld flights and for Emerald and Sapphire members. The Privium lounges are a case apart, reserved for Privium Plus members and, in part, for those with a voucher. The Privium ExpressLounge, in the Schengen area next to pier D, opens a rooftop terrace overlooking the apron in summer. The Privium ClubLounge West is on the non-Schengen side, along the Holland Boulevard behind the Dutch Bar & Kitchen. The Privium ClubLounge Departures, finally, is the only one, among those of Schiphol presented here, that is before security, behind check-in desk 9, between Departure Halls 1 and 2: useful for waiting calmly for whoever is accompanying you or before facing security.
At Schiphol the first step is to understand whether the flight is Schengen or non-Schengen, because every lounge sits on only one side. Then the access title matters: with a premium ticket or status you go to the lounge of your own airline or alliance, with Priority Pass or DragonPass to the Aspire on the right side, and those flying economy can pay the entry to the Crown Lounge away from peak hours. Privium members, finally, have lounges of their own on both sides and even before security.
