Kuala Lumpur lounges: Terminal 1 or klia2, what changes

Even before the card in your pocket, what counts at Kuala Lumpur is the terminal: Terminal 1 and klia2 each have their own lounges, with almost opposite logic. At Terminal 1 the widest choice is in the Satellite, beyond the Aerotrain; at klia2 several lounges sit before security, and that changes how you plan your wait.
At Terminal 1 the first question is whether you have already cleared security. Before the checkpoints there are two options, very different from each other: the Sphere Lounge, linked to the Sama Sama Hotel, is one of the few lounges in the terminal you can use without having gone through the gates, and it has showers; the Capsule Transit Sleep Lounge, in the departures hall, is not a waiting room but a single bed with a digital lock, which with Priority Pass you book for a timed visit. After security, if you leave from the Contact Pier you will find the two Plaza Premium lounges a few steps from each other. The Plaza Premium Lounge, open all night and accessible with Priority Pass, has a bar and hot dishes but no showers; those are in the nearby Plaza Premium First, the upscale version, which focuses on hot meals prepared to order.

If you board from the Satellite, reached by Aerotrain, you get the airport's largest concentration of lounges. With Priority Pass the options are the Sky Suite Lounge, next to gate C5, with showers and a time limit, and the Travel Club Lounge towards gates C11-C17, with a bar and hot dishes. If your layover falls at night and the goal is to sleep, the Kepler Club from gate C33 offers private capsules with showers and lockers included, again with Priority Pass but not for younger children. With a Malaysia Airlines Business or First ticket, or with oneworld Emerald or Sapphire status or Enrich Gold and Platinum, the right lounge depends on the type of flight. In the Satellite there is the Malaysia Airlines International Golden Lounge, and on the same mezzanine the Malaysia Airlines Platinum Lounge, reserved for Platinum passengers, with a tailored menu and personalised service. For regional flights there is the Regional Golden Lounge at gate H, which also admits some SkyTeam passengers and pairs its showers with a family room and a prayer room; for domestic flights, the Malaysia Airlines Domestic Golden Lounge at gate A. At klia2 the reasoning is reversed. The Plaza Premium Lounge at gateway@klia2, next to the Aerotel, can be used without having cleared security and is useful if you arrive very early; in the departures hall, near the row S check-in desks, the Sky Suite Lounge has hot dishes, but among the free alcoholic drinks only beer. For a real rest there is CapsuleTransit MAX, a capsule service with showers more than a waiting lounge. Past security, on the international side, the Travel Club Lounge (Gate L8) offers free beer and conference rooms, here too with a limited stay.
To sum up, in Kuala Lumpur you choose the terminal first and then the lounge. At Terminal 1, with Priority Pass, the Satellite gives more alternatives, from lounges with showers to the Kepler Club capsules, while the Contact Pier suits those boarding there. With a premium Malaysia Airlines ticket or the right status, the lounge is the Golden Lounge for your type of flight. At klia2 the decision has to be made before the checkpoints: stay in a landside lounge or carry your wait through to the Travel Club at gate L8. And for sleeping, a capsule beats an armchair.
