Mataveri Airport IPC

Chile

Mataveri Airport is Easter Island's (Rapa Nui) only airport, among the world's most isolated, approximately 3,700 km from mainland Chile.

It has one of the world's longest runways, built in part as a possible emergency landing site for NASA's Space Shuttle, and is located just minutes from Hanga Roa, the island's only inhabited settlement.

How to get to Mataveri Airport

Hanga Roa, the island's only village, is only approximately 2 km from the airport: transfer typically takes 5-10 minutes by taxi.

By Car

Those arriving by car reach Hanga Roa in a few minutes, as the airport is very close to the village.

By Train

Easter Island does not have a railway network.

By Bus

There is no dedicated public bus service for flights, given the island's small size.
💡
Tips Before leaving, complete the Formulario Único de Ingreso (FUI) online, mandatory for Easter Island: you must demonstrate a return flight within 30 days and accommodation booked at a SERNATUR-authorized facility. Entry to Rapa Nui National Park, where almost all the moai are located, costs approximately 95,000 CLP (99 USD) and must be purchased upon arrival.

Hotels near Mataveri Airport

Mataveri is the world's most isolated civilian airport and lies about 3 km from Hanga Roa, the island's only settlement: 5-7 minutes by car, with no public bus linking the two points. There is therefore no real choice of area, as there would be at a big-city airport: you always sleep in Hanga Roa, only which corner of town changes. The supply is made up mainly of family-run cabañas and hostales rather than international chains, and many properties include the transfer to and from the airport, useful since there are few taxis on the street.
Nearby town

Hanga Roa

By car, 5-7 minutes are enough for the roughly 3 km separating Mataveri from the centre of Hanga Roa; on foot it is a 30-40 minute walk without a continuous pavement, so most visitors use the transfer offered by the property or a taxi arranged in advance.

Best for: Anyone visiting Rapa Nui: there is no alternative area, only the choice between the north side near Pea beach and the south side towards the Rano Kau volcano.

Pros
  • Restaurants, the two main supermarkets and the small harbour are all within walking distance of any lodging in town
  • Many cabañas and hostales include a free airport pick-up, handy since there are no public buses or guaranteed taxi queues
Cons
  • The airport perimeter effectively cuts the town in two: those seeking absolute silence need to head to the far south, at the foot of Rano Kau
  • Outside the central streets there is no public lighting, so in the evening it is better to stay around the port and the church

Airport services

The airport offers essential services consistent with the island's extreme isolation and very limited size.

Shopping & Duty Free

A small retail point offers Rapa Nui crafts, including miniature moai reproductions and traditional fabrics.

Lounges & relaxation

Due to its limited size, the airport does not offer dedicated business lounges.

Connectivity & Wi-Fi

Free Wi-Fi is available in the terminal's public areas with limited reliability due to the remote location. There is no phone shop at the airport; obtain a Chilean SIM before leaving the mainland, as the island has coverage from only one local operator.

Families & Children

Basic family assistance is organized in the waiting areas of the terminal.

Terminal guide

The small terminal, with its characteristic Rapa Nui-style architecture, is easily navigable. From check-in to gate you generally walk only a few minutes.

Flights are limited to just a few weekly frequencies, almost all operated by LATAM from Santiago: always verify updated schedules in advance, as it is the only regular connection to the island.
