Phnom Penh Techo Airport KTI

Cambodia

Techo International Airport, inaugurated on 9 September 2025, has replaced the old Phnom Penh airport (Pochentong, closed on 8 September 2025) as the leading airport of the Cambodian capital and the country. It is located in Kandal Stueng district, approximately 20 km south of the city centre, compared to just a few kilometres of the previous airport.

With an investment of approximately 2.3 billion dollars over more than 2,600 hectares, it is one of Cambodia's largest infrastructure projects: designed to reach 50 million passengers annually at full capacity (in three phases), it also aims to be among the world's most sustainable airports, with extensive solar-powered coverage.

Techo → Royal Palace and Sisowath Waterfront

The Royal Palace and Sisowath waterfront, the tourist heart of the capital, are about 25 km from the new airport: the drive takes 45-60 minutes, longer than from the old Pochentong airport, now closed to commercial flights.

Techo → Russian Market (Phsar Tuol Tom Poung)

The Russian Market, the stall and handicraft district most frequented by visitors, is located south of the city: since the new airport is also further south than the old one, the distance to travel may be slightly shorter compared to the waterfront.

Techo → Koh Pich (Diamond Island)

Koh Pich, the artificial island with convention center and new skyscrapers and hotels, is a frequent destination for business travelers or conference attendees, reachable via the same route toward the center along the highway to Phnom Penh.

Techo → Central Market (Psar Thmei)

The Central Market, the Art Deco building with ochre-colored dome symbolizing the old city, is just minutes from the waterfront: a convenient reference point for those arriving by bus or taxi in the old town area.

Car rental at Phnom Penh Techo Airport

Car rental is available at the airport; drivers generally also need an International Driving Permit (IDP), though most visitors rely on taxis and local drivers.

Hotels near Phnom Penh Techo Airport

Techo is 20-25 km from Phnom Penh and the only direct link is by road: a taxi or ride-hailing app takes 45-60 minutes, the city line 1A about 90. The newly opened airport has no hotels with an established reputation nearby yet, so it makes sense to sleep in the city even for a single night. Leaving enough time matters more than proximity: with a morning flight, pick a hotel where the taxi can leave without hassle and book the car the evening before. Anyone staying a few days has three distinct hubs: the riverfront with the Royal Palace, the Wat Phnom area and the BKK1 business district.

Riverfront and Royal Palace

By taxi or booked car 45-60 minutes for 20-25 km; bus 1A costs less but takes about 90 minutes.

Pros
  • The Royal Palace, the National Museum and the riverfront are within walking distance
  • Plenty of tuk-tuks for short trips
  • Hotels for different budgets along the same stretch of the city
Cons
  • City traffic can stretch the trip to the airport beyond an hour
  • The riverfront is lively and at times noisy in the evening

  • Tree-lined streets, quieter than the riverfront

Frequently asked questions

Q. Is Techo International Airport the same airport listed as "Phnom Penh International" (PNH) on older maps and guides?

No: it's a completely new airport, not a rebranding of the Pochentong city airport it replaced. If a map, a guide, or a taxi driver still refers to the old PNH code or the old location near the city center, ignore them and look for the correct code, KTI.

Q. Is there an ATM or a currency exchange office right after landing at Techo?

Yes, in the Arrival Hall there are Wing Bank and Canadia Bank ATMs as well as an official exchange office; however, withdrawals with foreign cards carry a fixed fee of about 5 dollars, so it's better to withdraw one larger amount rather than repeating the operation several times.

Q. Can you buy a local SIM card right at Techo upon arrival?

Yes: the main Cambodian operators (Cellcard, Smart, Metfone) have desks directly in the Arrival Hall, so it's best to activate one there rather than looking for it in the city on your first day.

Q. How does the visa on arrival work at Techo?

The 30-day tourist visa is obtained at the terminal's modern automated immigration counters, paying 30 dollars in cash and presenting a passport photo; the e-Arrival Card must also be filled out online within 7 days before the flight, mandatory since 2025 and not replaceable with paper forms.

Q. Which lounges accept Priority Pass?

Plaza Premium Lounge (Main terminal).

Q. How much does lounge access cost without a business class ticket?

The lowest entry price is 40.50 USD, at Plaza Premium Lounge (Main terminal).

Q. What time does the first lounge open?

At 06:00: Plaza Premium Lounge (Main terminal).
