Car rental at Daniel Oduber Quiros International Airport
Major international car rental companies have desks in the arrivals area, particularly useful here given the distance between the airport and Guanacaste's beaches.
Bring driver's license, passport, and credit card registered to the driver for the security deposit; an International Driving Permit (IDP) is generally also required. Some roads to more remote beaches are not paved: consider a four-wheel drive vehicle during the rainy season.

Frequently asked questions
Q. Is there a risk of dengue or zika in the Liberia and Guanacaste area?

Yes, it's almost essential given that public transport to the Guanacaste beaches is limited: international companies have desks at the airport.
Q. Is it safe to swim at the Guanacaste beaches?
Most beaches are safe, but some have dangerous currents: check the safety flags posted on the beach before entering the water.
Q. Does Liberia have direct flights from Europe?
Some airlines operate direct seasonal connections, but intercontinental flights are more frequent to San José: check available routes at the time of booking.
