Airports in Libya

Libya: main airports

Libya is served by Mitiga Airport, the only operational international airport of the capital Tripoli since 2018, after the closure of the former Tripoli International Airport, seriously damaged by civil war fighting.

The country, the scene of political instability and clashes between rival factions since the fall of Gaddafi in 2011, is not currently considered an independent tourist destination.

Libya: visa and entry requirements

Visa procedures are subject to significant variation given the extraordinary conditions of the country: always check with a registered Libyan travel agency or the relevant diplomatic authorities before any consideration of travel.

It is not advisable to plan a trip to Libya except for specific professional needs with adequate logistical and security support.

Libya: safety

Almost all Western governments advise against any travel to Libya, due to the risk of armed clashes between rival factions, kidnappings, unexploded ordnance (including mines) widespread throughout the country and dangerous roads outside the main urban areas.

Independent travel is not recommended: those who travel to Libya generally do so through a registered Libyan travel agency, which handles permits, security and local logistics, or for specific professional reasons with adequate security support.

Libya: health situation

Up-to-date routine vaccinations are generally recommended, as well as hepatitis A and typhoid. Healthcare is seriously compromised in many areas of the country: travelling with medical travel insurance that includes evacuation coverage is essential for anyone travelling to Libya.

Libya: currency, payments and connectivity

The currency is the Libyan dinar (LYD), a closed currency that can only be exchanged within the country. Credit cards and electronic payments have very limited acceptance: bring all necessary funds in cash, preferably in US dollars or euros, as even ATMs are often out of service or unreliable.
