Niger: main airports
Niger is served by Diori Hamani International Airport in Niamey, the capital.
The country, largely Saharan, offers extraordinary desert landscapes, but is going through a period of severe political and security instability.
Niger: recommended activities
Niger: visa and entry requirements
Citizens of ECOWAS countries can enter without a visa for up to 90 days; most other nationalities, including the US, UK and EU, need a visa to be applied for in advance through an embassy, as Niger does not have a reliable e-visa system.
Since 2026 the United States has suspended visa issuance to Nigerien citizens: always check the updated situation and the feasibility of the trip before proceeding with any application.
Niger: safety
The security situation in Niger is very unstable: most Western governments strongly advise against any travel to the country, including Niamey and the once-touristic desert areas.
Always check your country's updated travel advisories before any consideration of travel to Niger: the situation includes risks of terrorism, kidnapping and political instability following the 2023 coup.
Niger: health situation
Vaccinations against hepatitis A, typhoid and yellow fever (often required for entry) are recommended, together with antimalarial prophylaxis. Healthcare facilities are very limited: travel insurance with medical evacuation coverage is essential.
Bring plenty of water and sun protection for any stay, given the extremely hot and arid climate.
Niger: currency, payments and connectivity
The currency is the West African CFA franc (XOF). Credit cards are accepted only at very few establishments: bring sufficient cash.
The official language is French, alongside numerous local languages such as Hausa. Given the current situation, leisure tourism is severely limited.
