Billund: the town born from a brick

Little more than a village before a local carpenter began producing wooden toys in the 1930s, Billund is today synonymous with the Lego brand worldwide.

Attractions are concentrated and easily reached on foot or by shuttle.

Opened in 1968, Legoland Billund was the brand's first theme park, built right next to the original brick factory.

Inside, Miniland recreates in scale, with millions of bricks, monuments and landscapes from around the world, from Egyptian pyramids to Manhattan skyscrapers, animated by small moving details.

Nearby, the Lego House, a tower-shaped building of stacked bricks designed by the Bjarke Ingels studio, hosts interactive rooms dedicated to creative play.

Toward evening, Billund's small airport, among the busiest in Denmark despite the city's small size, reminds you how much the Lego brand has transformed the local economy.

The word 'Lego' comes from the Danish 'leg godt', meaning 'play well': a linguistic origin that few foreign visitors know despite the brand's global fame.

Miniland is regularly updated by Lego model builders, who replace entire sections with new constructions whenever a real building in the world changes appearance or is demolished.
