Aarhus: the rainbow above the museum
Denmark's second-largest city, Aarhus has transformed its art museum's roof into a circular promenade that colors the entire city with rainbow hues.
The center is explored on foot; the tram line is useful for reaching beaches and distant neighborhoods.
At Den Gamle By, an open-air museum bringing together historic buildings transported from across Denmark, you walk among streets that recreate different periods of Danish urban life.
Continuing toward the center, you visit the Latin Quarter, a maze of narrow streets with independent shops and cafés.
Just steps away, Aarhus Cathedral, the longest and tallest in Denmark, preserves Romanesque elements that survived subsequent Gothic reconstructions.
Toward evening, ARoS, a contemporary art museum, takes you to the roof where Olafur Eliasson's 'Your Rainbow Panorama' allows you to view the city through glass panes of every color of the rainbow.
The ARoS rainbow walkway changes its appearance completely depending on where you stand: each colored segment tints both the city below and the visitors walking inside it with a different shade.
Den Gamle By continues to add historic buildings saved from demolition across Denmark, making the museum an ever-expanding project rather than a static collection.
