Billund Airport: where to stay, areas and recommended hotels

Billund is Denmark's second-busiest airport for passenger traffic despite serving a town of just over 6,000 residents, because much of its traffic is headed for LEGOLAND and LEGO House, both a few minutes from the terminal. Anyone with a dawn flight or a late-night return does well to stay close to the runway; those devoting at least a day to the park or the House of Bricks will find Billund's small centre more convenient, gathered right around LEGO House. Outside these two hubs there isn't much else: Billund grew up around the airport and the Lego factory, it isn't a city with neighbourhoods to choose between.

At the airport

The Airport Hotel is about 400 metres from the terminal, linked by a free shuttle available 24 hours on request; on foot it's 5-10 minutes.

Best for: Dawn departures, short stopovers or business travellers who don't want to move away from the terminals.

Pros
  • Free shuttle available at any hour, useful for the day's first flights
  • No reliance on buses or taxis to reach check-in
Cons
  • LEGO House and the centre of Billund are still about 3 km away, so a car or taxi is needed for the evening
  • An area made up only of hotels and car parks, with no town life around it

Billund centre and LEGO House

City centre · Taxi or car from the airport in 5-10 minutes; on foot it's about 45 minutes along through-roads, not very practical with luggage.

Best for: Travellers devoting a day to LEGO House or the town centre who want to get there on foot without using a car.

Pros
  • LEGO House reachable on foot in about 5 minutes, with no need for a car once you've arrived
  • Shops and restaurants of Billund's small centre a short walk away
Cons
  • Billund has very little evening life: most venues close early
  • For LEGOLAND, a little further south, you still need a longer walk or a car

Recommended hotels in this area

  • Billund Center Apartment: Apartment with kitchen about 500 metres from LEGO House, in the heart of town; convenient for families who want to cook and get around on foot between LEGO House and the centre's shops.

Outside the centre, with a garden

Neighbourhood · About 5 km from LEGO House and the airport, 8-10 minutes by car; without a car, getting around becomes awkward.

Best for: Families with their own car looking for more space and a garden, who don't mind moving a little further from LEGO House.

Pros
  • Garden with a play area, useful with small children after a day at the park
  • More space and calm than the apartments in the heart of town
Cons
  • A car is needed for any trip, including the return to the airport
  • No shops or restaurants nearby

Recommended hotels in this area

  • Aagaarden: Apartment with a private garden and play area for children, about 5 km from LEGO House; designed for families with a car staying more than one night.
