Guangzhou in a few hours: tower and canals

A gateway to Western trade for over a thousand years, Guangzhou preserves beneath the skyscrapers of the Pearl River Delta neighborhoods that tell that story far better than the skyline suggests.

The river remains the most natural thread connecting the day's stops.

The Canton Tower, over 600 meters of intertwined steel structure earning it the local nickname 'slim waist,' dominates the river since 2010 with a panoramic wheel suspended 450 meters high.

The Chen Clan Academy, a late nineteenth-century complex built with contributions from Chen clans from seventy-two counties of Guangdong, displays on its roofs and beams carvings in wood, ceramics, and plaster among the most elaborate in southern China.

The island of Shamian, a British and French concession from 1861 to 1943, preserves tree-lined avenues and European-style townhouses that deliberately clash with the China surrounding them on both sides of the canal.

At the Temple of the Six Banyan Trees, the nine-story pagoda with seventeen internal levels remains in active use as a Buddhist place of worship, with monks still officiating among devotees and tourists.

More than a century of architecture passes between Canton Tower and the colonial houses of Shamian, yet the Pearl River flows identically below both.

Guangzhou, unlike Beijing or Shanghai, doesn't ask the visitor to choose it as a destination: it allows itself to be discovered by those who pass through for work or connection, and rewards their attention anyway.
