Hamilton Island: the gateway to the Whitsundays
The only Whitsunday Island with its own airport, Hamilton Island remains the most convenient starting point to explore the Great Barrier Reef.
Electric golf carts remain the only motorized transport allowed on the island.
One Tree Hill, a panoramic hilltop in the center of the island, offers sunset views across the entire Whitsunday archipelago.
A few minutes by boat away, Whitehaven Beach, a pure silica sand beach considered among the world's cleanest, remains the most photographed destination in the entire archipelago.
Sailing further offshore, you reach Heart Reef, a heart-shaped coral formation visible only from above, part of the Great Barrier Reef.
As evening arrives, Hamilton Island's tourist port comes alive with restaurants and venues offering views of moored sailboats.
Whitehaven Beach's sand is composed of over ninety-eight percent pure silica, a purity level that prevents it from heating in the sun, remaining cool to the touch even on the hottest days.
Heart Reef, discovered by chance by a pilot in 1975 during a reconnaissance flight, can only be admired through helicopter or seaplane tours, as direct swimming is prohibited to protect the coral.
