Honningsvåg: the last stop before the North Cape
Northernmost city in Norway with official status, Honningsvåg remains the closest starting point to North Cape, the extremity of continental Europe.
A car rental or organized tour remains necessary to reach North Cape.
North Cape, sea cliff towering above the Arctic Ocean, marks the northernmost point of Europe reachable by car, with a famous monument shaped like a globe.
A few minutes away, the port of Honningsvåg animates the arrival of Hurtigruten ships along the Norwegian coastal route toward the Arctic.
Continuing into the surrounding tundra, you observe semi-wild reindeer grazing, herded by the Sámi communities of the region.
In the summer months, the midnight sun remains visible uninterruptedly above Honningsvåg, allowing excursions at any hour of day or night.
Cape North lies approximately 2,900 kilometers from the North Pole, and during the summer months the sun never completely sets for approximately two and a half consecutive months.
Honningsvåg was almost completely destroyed by retreating German troops in 1944, who implemented a scorched earth policy throughout Finnmark; only the town church survived the bombardments and was then almost entirely rebuilt in the postwar period.
