A Day in Babimost, Poland
In Lubusz Voivodeship, Babimost is a small center known mainly for the airport that serves Zielona Gora, capital of Poland's most important wine-producing region.
The surrounding territory, flat and crossed by minor watercourses, preserves a rural character typical of western Poland.
The small center of Babimost houses its parish church and traditional buildings that still testify to the history of this corner of Lubusz.
Heading toward Zielona Gora, you'll cross the first vineyards of the region, the only area of Poland with a continuous wine-making tradition dating back to medieval times.
A few kilometers away, the woods and lakes of the area offer flat cycling routes, much frequented on weekends by residents of the region.
Toward evening, local cellars offer tastings of Polish white wines, produced according to traditions resumed after the decline during the communist period.
Babimost is above all a gateway, but it introduces well to one of the less noted surprises of western Poland, its winemaking tradition.
Those who stop for even a brief moment discover agricultural territory capable of surprising enological production for the latitude.
