Kajaani Airport: where to stay, areas and recommended hotels

Kajaani Airport is about 10 km north of the centre, in the Petäisenniska district: here too there are no hotels near the terminal, but a shuttle coordinated with flight times and taxis cover the trip in 15-20 minutes. The city's hotels are all in the centre, along the Kajaaninjoki River, with the exception of the quiet historic Karolineburg estate, a few minutes' walk from the city core but already surrounded by greenery.

Kajaani centre

City centre · Airport shuttle coordinated with flight times, 15-20 minutes; taxi (Korpitaxi or Kajaani Regional Taxi) 10-15 minutes.

Best for: Any stay in the city, with the railway station, castle and museums just a few minutes' walk from the hotels.

Pros
  • Railway station, the ruins of Kajaani Castle and the Kainuu Museum within walking distance of the hotels in the centre
  • Several chain hotel options with sauna and an on-site restaurant, useful on long winter evenings
Cons
  • No properties near the terminal: every stopover still means a 15-20-minute shuttle or taxi ride
  • Outside flight hours the shuttle isn't available and only the taxi remains

Recommended hotels in this area

  • Original Sokos Hotel Valjus: In the heart of Kajaani for over a century, a 10-minute walk from the station and a few minutes from the Kainuu Museum and the castle; the Sulo restaurant on the ground floor.
  • Hotel Kajanus: On the bank of the Kajaaninjoki River, next to the Kaukametsä congress centre; 181 rooms, breakfast included and free sauna for guests.
  • Hotel Kajaani: Overlooking the river, a 10-minute walk from the station and about 1 km from the centre's shopping area; a quiet setting surrounded by water and greenery.

Karolineburg

Neighbourhood · Less than 1 km from Kajaani's centre, walkable; from the airport it's about 15-20 minutes by car or taxi, as for the rest of the city.

Best for: Anyone who prefers a quieter stay on a historic estate while still staying a few minutes' walk from the centre.

Pros
  • A rural estate from 1836, the northernmost in Finland, with a French-style garden and a private sauna in some rooms
  • A quieter atmosphere than the riverside hotels, while still staying a few steps from the centre
Cons
  • The restaurant is run by Hotel Kajanus in the neighbouring estate, not inside the main building
  • Fewer rooms than the large chain hotels in the centre: it fills up sooner during event periods

Recommended hotels in this area

  • Karolineburg Manor House Hotel: An estate from 1836 north of the Kajaaninjoki River, with 20 rooms split between the manor house and the White House Inn; breakfast served in the historic rooms or in the garden in summer.
