A Day in Hadsel, Norway
In the Vesteralen archipelago, the municipality of Hadsel includes Stokmarknes, birthplace of the famous Hurtigruten, the coastal ship service founded in 1893 by Richard With.
The landscape, made of islands, narrow channels, and mountains descending to the sea, reflects the same coast that the Hurtigruten ships still travel today.
The Hurtigrutemuseet in Stokmarknes tells the story of the coastal route and displays one of the old Hurtigruten ships preserved on dry land.
Heading along the Hadselfjorden channel, you'll observe the passage of modern coastal ships, still a fixed stop in Stokmarknes along the route toward the north.
A few kilometers away, the mountains of Vesteralen offer hiking trails with views of the numerous fjords and islands of the archipelago.
Toward evening, in summer months, the midnight sun illuminates the channel until late at night, offering intense colors on the calm waters.
Hadsel tells a maritime history fundamental to Norway, that of the Hurtigruten, which still today connects the coast from south to north.
An unmissable stopover for those wanting to understand the origins of one of the world's most celebrated shipping routes.
