One day in Geneva: itinerary and highlights
Geneva faces the homonymous lake with a water jet over one hundred meters high visible from much of the city, which has become over the years the symbol of one of the capitals of international diplomacy.
Seat of the European United Nations and world capital of watchmaking, it unites a Calvinist historic center gathered close together with a waterfront that on clear days offers an open view of Mont Blanc.
The Jet d'Eau sets the itinerary: the water jet rising from Lake Leman, originally a safety valve for industry transformed into a permanent attraction, remains the first landmark to orient yourself along the shore.
From there you easily reach the Old Town, the city built on a hill, dominated by the Cathedral of Saint-Pierre, where John Calvin preached during the Protestant Reformation and whose tower can be climbed for a view of the centre's roofs.
Descending toward the lake you meet the Flower Clock, the Horloge Fleurie of the Jardin Anglais, a living tribute to the watchmaking tradition that made Geneva renowned worldwide.
For lunch, venues along the shore or in the old city offer fondue and other Suisse Romande tradition dishes.
In the afternoon, the Palace of Nations, the European seat of the UN, has before it the Broken Chair, the sculpture shaped as a broken seat that denounces landmine use.
The walk along the lake instead leads to the Bastions Park, with the Wall of the Reformers dedicated to the protagonists of European Protestant Reformation.
With evening, returning to the centre, lakefront venues lend themselves to dinner, with the Jet d'Eau illuminated in the distance.
The Jet d'Eau, the Old Town, and the Saint-Pierre Cathedral are enough to show Geneva's dual nature, while the afternoon choice between the Palais des Nations and Bastions Park adds its diplomatic or historical side.
The watchmaking museums and a trip to CERN, just outside the city, remain chapters for a second visit. Seeing the Jet d'Eau stand out against the lake with Mont Blanc on the horizon captures Geneva in a single glance.
