Rio de Janeiro in a day: what to see
Rio de Janeiro stretches among mountains covered in forest and urban beaches, with Christ the Redeemer dominating the city from one of its highest elevations.
In one day it's possible to touch the two most photographed symbols of the city and the beach life that defined its image worldwide, moving between downtown, hills, and shoreline.
The Corcovado is visited best in early hours: the cogwheel train crossing the Tijuca forest carries visitors to the feet of the Cristo Redentor, the 30-meter-tall Art Deco statue that has watched the city from 710 meters since 1931.
Descending toward the center, the Santa Teresa quarter, with its cobblestone streets and colonial houses, preserves an artistic atmosphere different from the rest of the city, reachable also by the historic tram crossing the Arcos da Lapa.
For lunch, the establishments of the nearby Lapa quarter offer a taste of Brazilian cuisine, from feijoada to grilled meat skewers.
The Pão de Açúcar is the granite mountain reached by a cable car in two segments, with a bay view expanding as one ascends.
By the sea, the beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema, separated by the Arpoador promontory, offer a sunset seen from the rocks that has become a daily ritual for cariocas.
As evening approaches, the kiosks along the Ipanema waterfront remain the most natural point for a drink before dinner, with the sound of the ocean as a backdrop.
Corcovado, Santa Teresa, and Lapa are sufficient to tell Rio's historic and artistic soul, while the afternoon choice between Sugarloaf Mountain and the beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema adds the scenic or beach side.
The Maracanã, the stadium symbol of Brazilian football, and a trip to quieter beaches in the western zone remain chapters for a second trip. Seeing the Christ the Redeemer illuminated at night, visible from nearly every point in the city, remains Rio's most memorable detail.
