Tourist visa: what to check before your flight
A visa obtained is not automatically ready to use: the validity window for entry does not always coincide with the duration of stay permitted, and this is the most common misunderstanding to clarify before departing.
Validity window and number of entries
Many visas indicate a start date and expiry date within which entry must occur into the country, an interval distinct from the duration of stay actually permitted once inside: confusing the two pieces of information leads to involuntarily irregular stays. It is also important to check the number of permitted entries: some visas allow a single entry, others allow multiple entries within the validity period, a crucial detail for those planning to exit and re-enter to visit a neighboring country.
Biographical data and linked passport
Name, passport number and date of birth shown on the visa must match exactly those of the document presented at the border. Those who renewed their passport after obtaining the visa must pay special attention: the visa generally remains linked to the number of the original document, and a new passport might not be automatically recognized as linked to the authorization already obtained, requiring in some cases communication with the competent authorities before departure.
Paper copy, travel purpose and history of refusals
Some countries still require a paper copy of the visa with visible stamp, in addition to the digital version received by email: presenting only your phone can create complications with officials accustomed to more traditional procedures. It should also be remembered that a tourist visa does not generally cover work activities, not even occasional ones, and that any visa refusal received in the past must always be honestly declared in subsequent applications, when required: omitting the information is a greater risk than transparency about a past refusal adequately explained.
The right time for this check is a few days before departure, not the evening before: if a discrepancy in data emerges, there is time to contact the competent embassy or consulate while offices are still open.
