Sofia in a day: what to see
Sofia rises at the foot of Mount Vitosha, with buildings ranging from Roman remains to golden Orthodox domes, in one of Europe's least-visited capitals relative to its thousand-year history.
The compact center, walkable on foot, brings together different eras just steps from one another, from the Roman period to the twentieth-century Communist era.
The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral stands as the natural starting point: its golden domes, visible from much of the city, crown one of the Balkans' largest Orthodox churches, built in the late 19th century to honour Russian soldiers who died for Bulgarian independence.
A short walk away sits the Church of Saint Sofia, a 6th-century building that gave the city its name, far more austere than the neighbouring cathedral yet over a thousand years older.
Descending toward the centre, you pass through the Serdica archaeological complex, the remains of the Roman city uncovered during metro construction and now visible in the open air at the city's heart.
For lunch, the venues around Vitosha Boulevard, the pedestrian shopping avenue, serve Bulgarian cuisine such as banitsa, cheese-filled pastry.
The Church of Boyana, a UNESCO World Heritage site on the city's outskirts, is celebrated for its medieval frescoes, remarkably well preserved.
By cable car from the city you climb Mount Vitosha, where trails and panoramic views offer a change of pace from the historic centre.
The restaurants along Vitosha Boulevard's pedestrian walkway remain a reliable choice for dinner, with the namesake mountain framed in the background.
The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Santa Sofia, and Serdica effectively convey Sofia's layered history, while the afternoon choice between Boyana Church and Mount Vitosha adds its artistic or natural side.
The Jewish quarter with its synagogue and a visit to Sofia's Roman baths remain chapters for a return trip. Seeing the golden domes of the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral against the sky is what lingers longest from Sofia.
