What to see in Doha in 1 day
Doha faces the Persian Gulf with a skyline of skyscrapers that grew almost entirely in the last twenty years, yet still preserves a more traditional core along the bay.
The Corniche, the curved waterfront that follows the arc of the bay, remains the most natural point of reference to move between the city's two faces in a single day.
The National Museum of Qatar welcomes visitors from morning: the building designed by Jean Nouvel, inspired by the desert rose, a gypsum crystal forming naturally in arid zones, tells the country's story from Bedouin origins to oil discovery.
Nearby stands the Souq Waqif, the historic market reconstructed according to traditional Gulf architecture, with covered alleys dedicated to spices, fabrics and falcons, still sold and trained for hunting.
For lunch, the souq restaurants offer Qatari cuisine dishes like machbous, spiced rice with meat or fish.
The Islamic Art Museum, on its own artificial island facing the bay, collects over one thousand years of manuscripts, ceramics and fabrics from three continents.
A bit further along the coast, Katara Cultural Village is the cultural quarter with amphitheater, galleries and a mosque with geometric design, built to host events and exhibitions.
With evening approaching, returning along the Corniche, the West Bay skyline lights up across the bay: a walk on the waterfront remains the most natural way to close the day before dinner.
The National Museum of Qatar, the Souq Waqif, and the Corniche clearly explain the contrast between traditional Doha and that of skyscrapers, while the afternoon choice between the Museum of Islamic Art and Katara adds the artistic or cultural side.
An excursion into the desert toward the dunes of Khor Al Adaid and shopping in the city's huge shopping centers remain chapters for a second trip. Seeing West Bay's skyline illuminate at dusk, viewed from the Corniche, best encapsulates Doha more than anything else.
