Aarhus Airport: where to stay, areas and recommended hotels

Aarhus airport is in Tirstrup, over 40 km north-east of the city: an unusual distance for a regional capital, a legacy of a military airbase converted to civilian traffic at a time when it mattered little where the runways were built. There is no hotel near the terminals, so the choice is made entirely within Aarhus, where most hotels cluster around the central station and the harbour. Anyone with a dawn flight still has to reckon with almost an hour's transfer, whichever area they choose.

Central station and Jomfru Ane Gade

City centre · Bus 925X to the airport from Banegårdspladsen, in front of the station, in about 45-50 minutes; it follows flight schedules rather than a fixed timetable.

Best for: Travellers who want the airport bus a short walk away and city life without further journeys.

Pros
  • Airport bus stop a few steps from the room, with no need for a taxi
  • Shops, restaurants and the pedestrian district of the centre within walking distance
Cons
  • The transfer still takes almost an hour, whichever hotel you choose in Aarhus
  • The station area is busy and not very quiet during rush hour

Recommended hotels in this area

  • Milling Hotel Ritz Aarhus City: A building from the 1930s, about 2 minutes' walk from the central station, from where the airport bus departs; convenient for those arriving or leaving with little time to spare.
  • Radisson Blu Scandinavia Hotel Aarhus: A congress-centre hotel, about 5 minutes' walk from the heart of Aarhus and close to the station; suited to those combining a night in the city with the transfer to the airport.

The harbour and Aarhus Ø

Neighbourhood · On foot or with a short city bus ride you reach Banegårdspladsen for bus 925X to the airport, about 45-50 minutes in total.

Best for: Travellers who prefer the regenerated harbour area, between Dokk1 and ARoS, with a more modern atmosphere than the historic centre.

Pros
  • Modern harbour district, with the Dokk1 library and the ARoS museum a few minutes' walk away
  • Quieter area in the evening than the Jomfru Ane Gade core
Cons
  • You still need to reach the station for the airport bus, so there's one extra step
  • Fewer restaurants and evening venues than the historic centre

Recommended hotels in this area

  • Moxy Aarhus: Recently opened hotel in the harbour district, a few minutes' walk from Dokk1 and the Bruun's Galleri shopping centre; rooftop terrace and a gym open 24 hours.

Skejby, the hospital and exhibition district

Neighbourhood · The light rail (Letbanen) connects Skejby to the central station in a few minutes, from where bus 925X departs for the airport: the total time is no shorter than from the city centre.

Best for: Travellers with work commitments or a visit to Skejby's university hospital, with no need for the historic centre.

Pros
  • About 200 metres from the light rail stop, convenient for the university hospital and the exhibition area
  • Free parking, useful for those arriving by car
Cons
  • It is no closer to the airport than the centre: the transfer still requires changing at the station
  • An office and hospital area, with no evening life of its own

Recommended hotels in this area

  • Four Points Flex by Sheraton Aarhus Skejby: 200 metres from a light rail station that reaches the centre in a few minutes; designed for those working in the Skejby university hospital area, not for those seeking the historic centre.
