Gällivare Airport: where to stay, areas and recommended hotels
The airport is about 7 km from central Gällivare, reachable by taxi in 10 minutes: for a one-night layover or a morning departure, the centre remains the most practical choice. Those coming to ski can instead head straight for Mount Dundret, 5 km from the centre and about 13 km from the airport, where some private cabins have the slopes just steps from the door.
Central Gällivare
City centre · About 7 km from the terminal, 10 minutes by taxi; there is no scheduled airport bus, so outside the hours of the few daily flights it's worth booking a taxi in advance.
Best for: Those who want the station, the Sami church and the centre's restaurants within walking distance, with the airport 10 minutes by taxi.
Pros
- Railway station and the seventeenth-century Sami church within walking distance of most hotels
- Mount Dundret 5 km away, handy even without changing accommodation for those who want to ski for just half a day
Cons
- No scheduled airport bus: outside flight times a taxi must be booked
- The centre is small and there are few restaurants open in the evening outside the hotels themselves
Recommended hotels in this area
- Grand Hotel Lapland: Right in front of the railway station, in the heart of Gällivare and 5 minutes on foot from the Sami church; buffet breakfast noted as a strong point by guests, spa and gym included.
- Scandic Gällivare: Formerly Liza Hotell, taken over by Scandic in 2016; 7 minutes on foot from the station and 6 minutes by car from Mount Dundret, with in-house spa and gym.
