Getting around the airport with kids: perfect logistics

In many cases, the stroller can stay with you until the airplane door, but rules about sizes and return change from airline to airline, and knowing them in advance avoids unexpected stops in the terminal.

Stroller from check-in to gate

ITA Airways carries the stroller free with any fare, registering it at check-in as checked baggage; alternatively, a stroller backpack can stay in the cabin if overall dimensions do not exceed 118 cm (55x40x23), or as an accessory item if smaller than 45x20x36 cm. On many ITA flights arriving or transiting through Italian airports, you can also ask at check-in for planeside or gate return. Ryanair allows one fully collapsible stroller plus a second item of your choice between carrycot, car seat, or travel crib for free, while easyJet permits two free pieces of baby equipment and also accepts the baby backpack, but the stroller enters the cabin only if it doesn't exceed 56x45x25 cm and you've purchased the large carry-on baggage. The differences are real, so it's always worth checking the airline's baggage page before departure.

Changing tables, family rooms, and play areas

The larger terminals indicate on their interactive maps the location of bathrooms with changing tables and family rooms, useful for a quick change or a break away from the crowd; at smaller airports these spaces are less common, so it's good to check on the airport's website before the flight. The same applies to play areas, present mainly in the terminals of major hubs and almost absent at many regional airports.

Baby carrier and security checks

Carrying the child in a baby carrier or sling leaves your hands free for documents and luggage during boarding, but at security checks you may be asked to remove it and have it pass through X-rays anyway. Not all airports offer a dedicated family lane: where it exists, such as at some international airports, it reduces waiting times, but it's not a guaranteed service everywhere. For the detailed procedure, also see how to handle security checks with small children.

Before you leave, check on your airline's website the exact dimensions allowed for the stroller in the cabin: a few centimeters can determine whether you'll get it back at the gate or have to wait for it at the baggage claim.
