Hosea Kutako International Airport: where to stay, areas and recommended hotels

Hosea Kutako Airport sits in the savannah 45 km from Windhoek, with which there's no rail link at all: by car or shuttle it takes 40 to 60 minutes depending on traffic on the B6, the only road connecting the two areas. That's why many travellers starting or ending a safari prefer to sleep a step from the terminals on the first or last night, sparing themselves the trip with the off-road vehicle's luggage; those staying a couple of days in the city before departing instead find museums, restaurants and the shopping of Independence Avenue within walking distance downtown. A third option, handy for those continuing the trip with a domestic flight to the parks, is to sleep near Eros, the domestic airport south of the city.

Near the airport, on the B6

Airport area · The property is on the B6 about 4 km from the terminal, a few minutes by car; there's no public shuttle, so a private transfer must be arranged with the property or a car rented at the airport.

Best for: Those arriving late at night or departing at dawn for an intercontinental flight who prefer not to cover the 45 km to Windhoek twice in a few hours.

Pros
  • A few minutes by car from check-in, useful for those arriving or leaving at inconvenient hours
  • An independent villa with private pool, garden and kitchen, convenient for families or small groups
Cons
  • An isolated area in the savannah outside the city: for dinner or groceries you still need a car
  • No public transport; without your own car you need to arrange the transfer with the property in advance

Recommended hotels in this area

  • Nature Retreat -Self Catering- near Windhoek Airport: A 3-bedroom villa with private pool, garden and sauna about 4 km from the Hosea Kutako terminal, on the B6; full kitchen for those arriving tired from a long flight who don't want to go out looking for dinner.

Windhoek city centre

City centre · About 45 km from the airport, 40-60 minutes by car, taxi or private shuttle depending on traffic on the B6; there's no rail link nor a scheduled bus serving the terminals.

Best for: Those who want a couple of days in the city before or after the safari, with the National Museum, Zoo Park and the restaurants of Independence Avenue within walking distance.

Pros
  • Independence Avenue, the National Museum and Zoo Park reachable on foot from the city-centre hotels
  • The city's highest concentration of restaurants, bars and shops
Cons
  • The trip from the airport stays long wherever you choose to sleep, so it doesn't help those with a dawn flight
  • Some historic hotels in the centre show signs of wear in cleanliness relative to the price charged

Best for: Business trips and conferences, or those continuing the journey with a domestic flight from Eros Airport to the national parks.

Pros
  • A few steps from Eros for those continuing with a domestic flight to Sossusvlei, Etosha or the coast
  • Outdoor pool and gym at both hotels in the complex, handy between meetings
Cons
  • A residential district south of the city: in the evening you depend on a taxi to reach the centre
  • No real advantage in transfer times from Hosea Kutako compared with those staying in the centre
