Luggage for business trips: what to pack

On a business trip of two or three days, staying within carry-on limits usually allows you to leave the airport without passing through baggage claim, saving 20-30 minutes that in a work schedule are worth more than the convenience of a larger suitcase.

Wrinkle-free clothes: fabrics and practical tricks

For work clothes, technical stretch fabrics designed for frequent travelers wrinkle far less than pure cotton or linen, and some trolleys with integrated garment sections let you transport a jacket or dress on hangers instead of folded, arriving at the hotel already presentable.

If the garment wrinkles anyway, hanging it in the bathroom during a hot shower for 10-15 minutes uses steam to smooth out the most surface wrinkles: it doesn't replace an iron, but it's enough to save a shirt before an urgent meeting.

Electronics and documents at security

Laptop and work documents go in an easily accessible compartment of your carry-on: at airports without the new scanners they must be extracted and passed separately, and searching for them in panic with the line advancing is one of the most common hassles for those already on tight schedules. At airports equipped with the new 3D CT scanners (including Fiumicino, Linate, Malpensa, Bergamo, Bologna, and Turin) this step is no longer necessary, because the system analyzes the bag contents without needing to extract anything.

A cable organizer prevents chargers from getting lost in the bottom of your bag, while a power bank is almost essential between flights and a call to manage while waiting for boarding: for air travel safety regulations, spare lithium batteries, including power banks, must always be in carry-on and are forbidden in checked baggage.

Carry-on or checked baggage for short trips

Those who frequently fly low-cost carriers for day trips should verify in advance what is included in the booked fare: Ryanair charges separately for carry-on (up to 10 kg, 55x40x20 cm), while easyJet includes a bag under the seat free up to 15 kg. It's worth verifying with certainty what's included in your ticket before showing up at the gate with oversized baggage.

Those with access to an airport lounge, through frequent flyer status or a dedicated credit card, can use it for a final review of meeting materials or to freshen up before boarding: there are ways to get lounge access even without a business ticket, useful for frequent business trips.

Change of clothes, toiletry kit, and expenses to report

Always carrying, in your carry-on and not checked, a spare shirt avoids showing up to a crucial meeting with a coffee stain or signs of hours of travel; a small quick toiletry kit with deodorant, toothbrush, and comb completes the preparation for those who arrive and must be operational within hours.

For expenses to report to your company, a dedicated receipt organizer, separate from your work documents folder, avoids finding crumpled receipts in the days after your return. Those transporting expensive work-related equipment, such as photography gear or samples, should verify whether their professional insurance would cover those items in case of damage: airlines severely limit liability for declared valuables in checked baggage.

Never leave a spare shirt, chargers, and your most important documents in checked baggage: keeping them in carry-on is the only guarantee of remaining operational even if the rest of your baggage arrives delayed on a later flight.
