Moorea Airport: where to stay, areas and recommended hotels

Temae airport, on Moorea's northeastern coast, is linked by a single road that circles the island: straight-line distance matters less than which side of the island you sleep on, since the perimeter runs over 60 km. Staying near Temae gets you there in 5 minutes, but coming down the west coast, toward Haapiti, means counting on 25-30 minutes by taxi or shuttle. Moorea has no regular public bus service, so almost every hotel arranges its own transfer on request.

Temae, next to the airport

Airport area · The Sofitel Kia Ora is about 5 minutes by car from the terminal; the Temae Beach villas are in the same area, 5 minutes from the public beach and 10 from the ferry pier to Tahiti.

Best for: Those who want the shortest possible transfer, with Temae's public beach and the golf course just minutes away.

Pros
  • Shortest transfer on the island, handy for late arrivals or early departures
  • Temae's public beach, among the widest on Moorea, just minutes away on foot or by car
Cons
  • Few independent restaurants in the area: you depend on the resort or a drive
  • Moorea's most scenic side, Cook's Bay and Opunohu Bay, stays 30-40 minutes away on the road around the island

Recommended hotels in this area

Haapiti and the west coast, quiet guesthouses

Nearby town · About 25-30 minutes by car from Temae airport along the road around the island; no public transfer, it has to be arranged with the guesthouse.

Pros
  • Haapiti's beaches and surf breaks are less crowded than the Temae side
  • Family-run guesthouses, often with breakfast included and owners who help arrange excursions
Cons
  • Longest transfer on the island from the airport, to be arranged in advance with the guesthouse
  • Few restaurants nearby: you eat almost always where you stay
