New flight routes: where to fly next season
New flight routes are almost always announced 9-12 months before the first flight, with aggressive launch fares in the first weeks to fill the aircraft: knowing where to look to discover them early, before the launch price rises, makes a real difference on your ticket.
Where the announcements appear first
Airlines publish new routes in the news/newsroom section of their website, often with an official press release and, for major routes, exclusive previews on industry outlets like Skift or Aviation Week. Following your preferred airline's website directly, instead of waiting for the news to appear on general social media, is the most direct way to find out weeks or months ahead of the mass of travelers.
Why launch fares are worthwhile (for a limited time)
An inaugural flight needs to fill the aircraft from its first weeks of operation, and for this reason airlines almost always apply aggressive promotions on initial sales: this is when a new route really costs less than at regular rates. The price tends to normalize after a few months, once demand stabilizes, so moving in the first weeks after the announcement is where you find the widest margin for savings.
What to look at beyond price
A new point-to-point route, especially on efficient long-range aircraft like the Boeing 787 or Airbus A321XLR, often avoids a connection that was previously mandatory to that destination: it's worth comparing the total travel time of the new direct route with your usual solution with a stopover, because the time savings is not always as obvious as the announcement suggests.
If you have a specific destination in mind, the most efficient way is not to wait for the news by chance, but to periodically check the "new routes" page of the airline that operates most often to that destination: that's where the information arrives first, and with the launch discount still active.
