Passport and visas: the basics for traveling safely
Two technical details are enough to block an otherwise perfect passport: the residual validity required by the destination country, which ranges from three to six months beyond your return, and the number of consecutive blank pages required for stamps — both must be verified on the destination's official website, not based on hearsay.
Residual validity and blank pages: the two rules that block boarding
There is no single residual validity threshold: some destinations require the passport to be valid for at least three months after your return, others for six, and the exact figure changes from country to country, so it must be verified specifically before booking, not assumed from habit. Likewise, some countries require two consecutive blank pages to affix visa and entry stamp: an almost exhausted passport must be renewed even if it has not technically expired yet.
Passport lost or stolen abroad: the actual procedure
In case of theft or loss, the first two steps are the report to local authorities and immediate contact with the nearest embassy or consulate, which can issue a provisional travel document valid only for return. Having a digital copy and a color photocopy of the data page and pages with visas significantly speeds up this procedure, because the consulate starts precisely from those data to prepare the replacement document.
Sensitive stamps and the case of a second passport
Some countries deny entry or launch additional checks to those who have entry stamps from previous visits to countries with which they have diplomatic tensions. In Italy a second passport is granted only in specific cases authorized by the Police Headquarters, typically for documented professional needs that require visiting countries in diplomatic conflict with each other: it is not an automatic procedure nor available to anyone who requests it, so it should be verified directly with the Police Headquarters before relying on this solution.
Photograph or scan both the data page and pages with visas and stamps from your passport before leaving: these are exactly the documents a consulate asks for to speed up the issuance of a provisional travel document in case of theft or loss.
