Port Harcourt International Airport: where to stay, areas and recommended hotels

Port Harcourt Airport is in Omagwa, in the Ikwerre area, about 25-33 km from the centre of Port Harcourt: a 35-60 minute drive, longer at times of heavy traffic, with no direct public transport link between the two areas. For this reason a hotel near the terminal only pays off for short layovers or dawn departures, while those with business commitments or a longer stay find the higher-tier hotels only in the city, between the Government Residential Area and Stadium Road. In both cases a taxi remains the only way to get to and from the airport.

Along Airport Road, towards Igwuruta

Airport area · The Crownsville Hotel is in Igwuruta-Ali, along Airport Road, about 7.8 km from the terminal: about 25 minutes by car, against the 35-60 minutes separating the airport from the centre of Port Harcourt.

Best for: Short layovers and early-morning departures, when you want to avoid the long trip to the city centre.

Pros
  • The closest verifiable hotel to the terminal in the Port Harcourt area, handy for night or dawn flights
  • Solid cleanliness and staff scores across several booking platforms
Cons
  • Only the countryside of Igwuruta-Ali around: no restaurants or bars outside the hotel
  • An evening in the city centre still takes 35-60 minutes by car, given the real distance between the airport and Port Harcourt

Recommended hotels in this area

  • Crownsville Hotel - Airport Road: The only verifiable hotel really close to the terminal, about 7.8 km along Airport Road, in Igwuruta-Ali; 4-star category with room service and reception open 24 hours a day.

City centre: GRA and Stadium Road

City centre · From the Omagwa terminal the centre of Port Harcourt, between the GRA and Stadium Road (today Ken Saro-Wiwa Road), is about 25-33 km away: 35-60 minutes by taxi, the only option available in the absence of direct public links with the airport.

Best for: Those with business commitments or a longer stay in the city who prefer the higher-tier hotels of the Government Residential Area, accepting the longer transfer from the airport.

Pros
  • The only area with a verifiable international chain hotel (Novotel/Accor) and higher-tier properties with pool and spa
  • GRA and Stadium Road offer restaurants and city life entirely absent around the airport
Cons
  • Considerable real distance from the airport: an area poorly suited to short layovers or dawn departures
  • No direct train or bus to the airport: a taxi is the only option, with fares roughly between 8,000 and 12,000 naira
