Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport: where to stay, areas and recommended hotels

Robert L. Bradshaw International is less than 2 km from downtown Basseterre and a short walk from the coastal district of Bird Rock, so anyone who only needs to sleep one night before a morning flight has no reason to go further: the island's shortest transfer is still the one to the city centre. Those with a few days for the beach, though, can head to Frigate Bay and the South East Peninsula, the strip of beaches and resorts to the southeast, reachable in 10-15 minutes by car.

Basseterre and Bird Rock

Airport area · Bird Rock is about 800 metres from the terminal, 2-3 minutes by car or taxi; downtown Basseterre and the cruise port are about 2 km away, 5-10 minutes.

Best for: Early-morning departures or short layovers, when it pays to stay close to the runway and the harbour without giving up a proper restaurant.

Pros
  • The shortest possible transfer on the island, just minutes on both arrival and departure
  • Restaurants, market and cruise-ship port within walking distance of the centre
Cons
  • The best beaches are still those at Frigate Bay, 10-15 minutes further by car
  • Bird Rock is a residential and port district, not a tourist area: in the evening there is little beyond the hotel

Recommended hotels in this area

  • Bird Rock Beach Hotel: Beachfront hotel in Bird Rock, about 800 metres from the airport; home to one of the island's main diving centres, with boat trips to Devil's Cave among barracudas and nurse sharks.
  • The Colosseum St Kitts: A 7-room guesthouse in downtown Basseterre, connected to a shopping centre and an 8-minute walk from the cruise-ship port; handy for those who want to stay in the city without a proper chain hotel.

Frigate Bay and South East Peninsula

Neighbourhood · About 6-8 km from the airport along Frigate Bay Road: 10-15 minutes by car or taxi, with no practical public-transport alternative for those carrying luggage.

Best for: Those staying more than one night and wanting beach, pool and restaurants on hand, accepting a quarter-hour transfer from the airport.

Pros
  • Beaches on both sides of the peninsula, Atlantic and Caribbean, just minutes on foot from the resorts
  • Restaurants, golf course and evening life concentrated in a single area, manageable without a car once you've arrived
Cons
  • Without a rental car you depend on taxis for any trip outside the resort
  • Further from Basseterre's historic centre and the cruise port
