Taiyuan Wusu Airport: where to stay, areas and recommended hotels

Since 22 February 2025, metro line 1 has crossed the entire city from end to end, with Wusu airport at one terminus: 24 stations and almost 29 km that take in both Xiaodian district, where the airport is, and Taiyuan's historic railway station. The airport is just 13 km as the crow flies from the centre, so even those who need to catch an early flight can stay in either area without losing too much time in transfer. Xiaodian, the airport district, is also the city's newest business and commercial quarter; the historic centre around the station still remains the handiest base for anyone who wants to go out on foot in the evening.

Xiaodian and Changfeng Street

Airport area · Direct metro line 1, with Wusu airport at one terminus; by car 15-20 minutes depending on the exact point, since Xiaodian district is the same one where the airport is located (about 12 km from the big hotels on Changfeng Street).

Best for: Those who want to stay in the same district as the airport, among shopping malls and the city's newest business quarter.

Pros
  • Same district as the airport, so transfers are short even by taxi
  • Shopping malls and the Shanxi International Expo Center just a few minutes away
Cons
  • A quarter designed for offices and shopping, not for historic tourism
  • The historic centre with the railway station remains 20-25 minutes away

Recommended hotels in this area

  • Kempinski Hotel Taiyuan: On Changfeng Street, in the commercial centre of Xiaodian district, 12 km from the airport and 7 km from the South railway station; an indoor pool, spa and four restaurants linked to the convention centre.
  • JW Marriott Hotel Taiyuan: Connected to a shopping mall on Qinxian North Street, also in Xiaodian district; 308 rooms, staff described as highly professional in reviews.
  • City Comfort Inn Taiyuan Xiaodian District Government Tongda Street Metro Station: A budget Chinese chain with the line 1 metro stop at Tongda Street right in its name: handy for anyone who wants the direct connection to the airport without the price of the international hotels on Changfeng Street.

Yingze and the railway station

City centre · Metro line 1 to Taiyuan West Square station, with no changes, with Wusu airport at the other terminus of the same line; by taxi 20-25 minutes.

Best for: Those who want the railway station and the historic centre within walking distance, with a metro transfer to the airport.

Pros
  • Just minutes on foot from Taiyuan railway station, also a hub for high-speed rail to Beijing and Xi'an
  • An area with more nightlife and restaurants than Xiaodian
Cons
  • Further from the exhibition district and the big shopping malls on Changfeng Street
  • A busy and less orderly station area compared with the new business quarters

Recommended hotels in this area

  • Park Inn by Radisson Taiyuan Railway Station Hotel: About a 10-minute walk from the railway station, with exit B of the Taiyuan West Square station on line 1 close by; reviews praise above all the breakfast and the location.
  • Pullman Taiyuan: In Xinghualing district, about 20 minutes by car from both the airport and the railway station and the business centre: an in-between position rather than specifically central.
