The mistakes that waste time at the airport
Most airport delays don't stem from a single unexpected event, but from the accumulation of small avoidable mistakes: baggage unprepared at security, underestimated travel times, choosing the wrong queue. Recognizing them makes it possible to eliminate them one by one.
Baggage and documents not ready at security
Arriving at the security checkpoint without having already removed liquids and electronic devices from your carry-on slows down your passage and that of those queuing behind you. The same applies to boarding pass and ID document: keeping them in a single easily accessible pocket, instead of having to search for them at every checkpoint, eliminates a delay that repeats multiple times along the journey. Your smartphone should also be put away a few seconds before the metal detector, not while approaching it still using it.
Underestimating actual distances
At an unfamiliar airport, assuming that the gate is nearby based on experiences at other airports often leads to departing with insufficient time. The specific indications of that airport - departure boards, official app, signage - are more reliable than a generic estimate based on different airports.
Optional activities without time control
Duty free, a leisurely meal or simply the phone can make you lose track of time during a wait that seems relaxed. Setting an alarm at a specific time to head toward the gate, instead of relying on your own perception of elapsed time, prevents this type of mistake.
Choosing the wrong queue at security
When there are multiple parallel lanes for the same service, positioning yourself in the first available without observing for a few seconds the pace of advancement often leads you to involuntarily choose the slowest queue. Watching the composition of the queues - families with many bags, solo travelers with just a backpack - before choosing takes only a few seconds and often saves several minutes.
The most effective fix is just one: keep your boarding pass, ID and liquids/electronics items already separated in a dedicated pocket before even entering the airport, so the time lost at security is reduced regardless of all other factors.
