The most useful apps before taking a flight
Before even leaving home, some well-chosen apps anticipate most of the problems that normally only show up at the airport.
Airline app and mobile boarding pass
Your airline's app remains the starting point: it allows you to complete check-in, save your digital boarding pass—often also on Apple Wallet or Google Wallet, accessible without unlocking the app—and receive push notifications about delays and gate changes.
Traffic and weather for calculating times
Navigation apps like Google Maps calculate travel time to the airport based on real-time traffic, data more useful than a fixed estimate in large cities. Aviation-specific weather apps also offer more detailed forecasts than generic ones, useful for anticipating delays related to wind or visibility on your route.
Checklist and currency
A notes app or custom checklist, reviewed in the final minutes before leaving home, reduces the risk of forgetting documents or chargers. A currency converter downloaded in advance avoids rough calculations on your first purchases at the airport, especially with an unfamiliar currency.
Organize these apps in a single folder on your phone's home screen, don't download them at the last minute: in the minutes before leaving home is when you have the least patience to configure something new.
