Udon Thani is not a seaside destination but a regional capital, often also used as a crossing point towards the Laos border and Vientiane. The airport is only 7 km from the centre, so close that the choice between "airport area" and "city centre" comes down to a few minutes by taxi: the first is only worth it for a very early morning flight, the second offers much more for dinner or shopping.
