Xoxocotlán International Airport: where to stay, areas and recommended hotels
Xoxocotlán International Airport: where to stay, areas and recommended hotels
Xoxocotlán airport is just 7 km from the historic centre of Oaxaca de Juárez, but the taxi ride still takes 20-30 minutes because of traffic and the road layout in the city's southern district. Since there is no real hotel district next to the runway and no rail link, almost all the accommodation worth considering for visitors to the city sits in the UNESCO-listed historic centre, between the Zócalo and the Templo de Santo Domingo: that is where it pays to sleep, both for having the monuments within walking distance and because verifiable options drop off quickly outside that area.
Historic Centre
City centre · About 7 km and 20-30 minutes by taxi from the airport, depending on traffic; there are no direct buses or regular airport shuttles, so the usual solution remains a taxi or a private transfer booked in advance.
Best for: Those who want the Zócalo, the Templo de Santo Domingo and the historic centre's markets within walking distance, with the shortest possible transfer from the airport for this city.
Pros
- Almost all the historic centre's monuments, from the Zócalo to Santo Domingo, are within walking distance of hotels in the area
- Most properties occupy restored eighteenth and nineteenth-century colonial houses, with interior courtyards and rooftop terraces
Cons
- Outside the historic centre verifiable alternatives are scarce: almost all the accommodation worth considering for visitors is concentrated here
- Foot traffic and noise from venues near the Zócalo can be disruptive on weekend evenings
Recommended hotels in this area
- Casa de las Flores Hotel: 7 minutes on foot from the Templo de Santo Domingo and 10 from the Zócalo, with a rooftop terrace and an in-house restaurant; the whole historic centre is reachable on foot.
- Casa de los Frailes Hotel: On Calle Constitución, a few steps from the Templo de Santo Domingo; 13 rooms with air conditioning and round-the-clock room service, among the area's most appreciated for value for money.
- Casa de Siete Balcones Hotel Boutique: Eighteenth-century colonial mansion between the Zócalo and Santo Domingo, with just 7 rooms (one per balcony) and continental breakfast included; the balcony doors shut out street noise better than many other hotels in the centre.
- Capital O Parador Crespo Hotel: 11 minutes on foot from Santo Domingo and 14 from the Zócalo, with an in-house regional-cuisine restaurant (La Ofrenda) and a rooftop terrace; the cheaper option of the four while still staying in the historic centre.
