Is Lucky Air Really Worth It? Fares, Baggage and What to Know Before Booking
Lucky Air is the low-cost carrier of the Hainan Airlines / HNA group, based at Kunming Changshui airport. Founded in 2004 as Shilin Airlines and renamed in 2005, it is now a founding member of the U-FLY Alliance, the cooperation network of Asian low-cost carriers, and serves 61 destinations with a fleet of about 51 aircraft.
History and positioning
The change from Shilin Airlines to Lucky Air also marked a commercial repositioning toward the low-cost model, with Kunming as the pivot of a network that looks both to inland China and, to a lesser extent, to international destinations such as Indonesia and Vietnam.
The fleet
The fleet is rather diverse for a low-cost airline: alongside the Airbus A319/A320/A321 family (including the neo models) it also operates widebody Airbus A330s and Boeing 737s, up to the 737 MAX 8. This variety lets it cover both short regional routes and longer links with greater capacity.
Fares and baggage
As the low-cost playbook goes, the base fare generally does not include checked baggage, an in-flight meal or seat selection: these are separate paid extras. As part of the U-FLY Alliance, on some routes connecting with other alliance members there may be dedicated baggage transfer conditions, to be checked case by case at the time of booking.
Routes and network
Besides domestic traffic from Kunming to China's main cities, Lucky Air is one of the few HNA group airlines with a real international reach, including Indonesia and Vietnam among the destinations served.
Lucky Air works well for anyone who wants to save money on a flight to or from Kunming and doesn't need checked baggage included; if instead you travel with heavy suitcases or want the certainty of an assigned seat with no surprises, work out the extras before comparing the price with other carriers. The most useful practical tip: buy baggage and seat in advance on the official website, because the prices of extras rise noticeably if you add them at airport check-in.
