Airport security: how to handle random checks
Being stopped for an additional check or a swab test for explosive residue is not an accusation: it affects a fixed percentage of passengers selected at random by the security system every day, regardless of your baggage or behaviour.
Why it happens, even with no suspicion
The random supplementary check is applied to a percentage of passengers decided by the security system, not by the officer at the checkpoint at that moment. Being selected for this check does not mean you have attracted particular attention: it is a procedure designed to add an unpredictable element to controls, applied even to passengers who have triggered no alarm at the metal detector or baggage scanner.
The swab test for explosive residue
The most common test consists of passing a swab over your hands or baggage surface, analysed in a few seconds by a device that detects chemical traces of explosive substances. It does not require prolonged contact or mandatory opening of the suitcase, unless the result indicates something to verify.
What actually speeds up the check
Having your baggage organised, with larger items (laptop, liquids) easily accessible, allows the officer to close everything quickly. Answering questions calmly, without arguing about the procedure at the counter, prevents the check from taking longer: showing impatience tends to result in more thorough attention, not because you are suspected, but because such behaviour still requires careful verification. On request, you can ask for inspection of delicate personal items to take place in a reserved area.
If you are selected, simply cooperate and keep your baggage organised: in the vast majority of cases the additional check takes less than a minute and involves nothing else.
