Myanmar Airways International: The Private Bridge Between Myanmar and Southeast Asia

Founded in 1993 as a private carrier, distinct from the state flag carrier, Myanmar Airways International (MAI) operates from two hubs, Yangon and Mandalay, concentrating its activity mainly on international links to the rest of Asia.

The fleet

The fleet combines six Airbus A320s, two Embraer E190s and four ATR72-600s, plus a Boeing 737-400F freighter dedicated to cargo transport, a composition designed to cover both medium-capacity international routes and shorter regional links.

History and positioning

Unlike the state carrier, MAI has focused from the outset on international opening, positioning itself as the main private air bridge between Myanmar and the regional hubs of Southeast Asia.

Routes and network

From its two hubs, the airline serves 42 destinations within Myanmar and abroad, with links to Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, China, India, the United Arab Emirates, Cambodia, Vietnam, South Korea, Russia and Laos.

On board and service

In 2022 MAI was named Airline of the Year at the Incheon Airport awards, one of the recognitions promoted by the South Korean airport that Skytrax magazine ranks among the best airports in the world, a sign of how the carrier is perceived on some of its busiest Asian routes.

It is a solid choice for those who need to connect Myanmar with the main Southeast Asian hubs without going through third-party carriers. It is less suitable for those looking for a truly global network, since the network remains concentrated in Asia. A practical tip: for card payments from some markets, buying directly on the website can prove difficult, so book through a regional agency if online payment is declined.
