One day in Dakar: itinerary and highlights

Dakar faces the Atlantic from the westernmost point of the African continent, with an island off the coast that for centuries was one of the major hubs of the Atlantic slave trade.

Capital of Senegal and a cultural crossroads of West Africa, it blends vibrant markets, French colonial heritage and one of Africa's tallest monuments.

The island of Gorée opens the dances: reachable by ferry in about twenty minutes, UNESCO heritage, it houses the House of Slaves, a memorial to the Atlantic slave trade with its famous door without return overlooking the ocean.

Walking through the colonial streets of the island, with their ocher-colored houses and wrought-iron balconies, you breathe an atmosphere suspended in time, today animated by local artists and artisans.

Returning to Dakar by ferry, for lunch the Plateau district, the colonial heart of the city, offers restaurants where you can taste thieboudienne, the national dish based on rice and fish.

In the afternoon, the African Renaissance Monument is the bronze statue over fifty meters tall that dominates the hill of the Mamelles, among the highest on the continent.

The Sandaga Market, the large covered market downtown, is instead the place to bargain for wax fabrics, masks, and craft objects among the crowded stalls.

As evening falls, the beach of N'Gor, with its small island reachable by swimming or pirogue, remains the most direct way to close the day watching the sun set over the Atlantic.

Gorée Island, Plateau, and Sandaga Market are enough to restore Dakar's historical layering, while an afternoon choice between the Renaissance Monument and the market adds the monumental or commercial side.

Pink Lake, with its unique colored water, and a trip to the Madeleines Islands National Park remain chapters for a second journey. Watching the sun set over the Atlantic from N'Gor beach remains the frame you take away from Dakar.
