Bhairahawa Airport: where to stay, areas and recommended hotels

Gautam Buddha International Airport, which became an international gateway in 2022, is in Siddharthanagar (the newer name for Bhairahawa), but the destination for those arriving here is almost always Lumbini, the Buddha's birthplace, about 22 km further south: these are two distinct places, not an airport with an outlying district. Those with an early flight or staying only for the layover find Siddharthanagar, the actual town, convenient; those here for the pilgrimage gain a lot by sleeping inside or next to the Sacred Garden of Lumbini, even though the transfer from the airport stretches to 30-45 minutes.

Siddharthanagar (Bhairahawa)

Airport area · About 11-12 km and 20 minutes by car from the terminal, on a direct road toward the centre of Siddharthanagar.

Best for: Short layovers, evening arrivals and those who want a handy base for offices or business in the real city, not for the pilgrimage.

Pros
  • A short, direct transfer from the terminal, without the longer trip toward Lumbini
  • The only area with real city life, restaurants and services beyond religious tourism
Cons
  • No direct link to the sacred sites of Lumbini: visiting them still takes 30-45 minutes by car
  • A border commercial area, not built for the pilgrimage atmosphere many visitors are looking for

Recommended hotels in this area

  • Tiger Palace By Soaltee: A 5-star resort with the largest casino in Southeast Asia (over 300 seats), about 11.8 km and 20 minutes from the terminal; outdoor pool and three restaurants.

Lumbini, the Sacred Garden

Neighbourhood · 22 km from the airport, 30-45 minutes by car; no direct public transport, a private taxi or a hotel-arranged transfer is the way to go.

Best for: Those here for the Buddhist pilgrimage who want to sleep steps from the Maya Devi Temple, the Buddha's birthplace.

Pros
  • The Maya Devi Temple, the UNESCO-listed Sacred Garden and the international monasteries within walking distance or by rickshaw
  • A pilgrimage and meditation atmosphere that Siddharthanagar doesn't offer
Cons
  • A longer transfer from the airport, to be factored in for return flights
  • A rural area: electricity and hot water can be irregular even in upscale properties

Recommended hotels in this area

  • Buddha Maya Gardens by KGH Group - Stay in the Sacred Heart of Lumbini: Inside the World Heritage Sacred Garden, steps from the Maya Devi Temple where tradition places the Buddha's birth; 80 rooms with gardens and a meditation grotto.
  • Hokke Lumbini: Among Lumbini's oldest hotels, run by the Japanese Hotel Hokke Club group; Japanese-style rooms, 6 minutes on foot from the Lumbini Museum and about 3.5 km from the Maya Devi Temple.
